MUZAFFARABAD, Aug 17 : Regional president of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chauhdry has been elected as 28th President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. He will take oath of his office on 24th August.
Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chauhdry elected the President of AJ&K while securing 34 votes while the opposition presidential candidate of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Mian Abdul Waheed secured 16 votes. Two opposition members Shah Ghulam Qadir and Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin did not cast their votes. Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin had won two seats and so far he has not taken oath as MLA and did not quit one seat.
It is worth mentioning here that Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chauhdry has contested assembly elections for 11 times and won nine times and faced defeat two times. He has served as prime minister of AJ&K during Pakistan People’s Party tenure in 1996.
The tenure of the incumbent President Sardar Muhammad Masood Khan will end by 24th of this month and Chief Justice Supreme Court AJK Raja Saeed Ikram will administer oath to the new President on the same day.
