BJP leader Altaf Thakur has claimed that 23 workers of the party were killed in Jammu and Kashmir in the last two years, including nine in the Kulgam district last year.
He said the newest victim was Javaid Ahmad Dar who was killed inside his residence in the Brazloo Jagir area of Kulgam on Tuesday evening.
Sources in the police said more than 100 BJP leaders and workers in Kashmir have been provided security by the state police.
These include the office bearers and first rung leaders of the party. But workers on the ground level are devoid of any security.
Sources said that it is not practically possible to secure all the political workers, be it from BJP or any other party.
Meanwhile, BJP has said the frequent killing of its workers is a matter of grave concern.
Condemning the killing of Javaid Dar, BJP spokesman Altaf Thakur said, "Militants are feeling frustrated and targeting innocents. Killing unarmed people won’t lead to anything”." He called the killings “cowardly and barbaric" and appealed to the police to nab the killers and punish them.”
In a tweet, Thakur said: “In last 2 years, 23 BJP leaders/activists killed. In past one year alone, nine deaths of BJP leaders/workers reported in Kulgam district alone".
