Chairman Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu Kashmir Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai passes away

SRINAGAR, May 05, : Quaid Tehreek-e-Azadi Jammu Kashmir Syed Ali Shah Geelani,s close aide Chairman Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu Kashmir Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai has passed away.

Booked under draconian Public Safety Act, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai was on July 12, 2020 shifted to Udhampur Jail in Jammu. Muhammad Ashraf Sehari was shifted to GMC hospital on Tuesday after his health had deteriorated. On Wednesday Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai passed away in GMC hospital after his oxygen level become very low. Muhammad Ashraf Sehari’s COVID-19 test had become negative but his RTPCR test was also conducted but results of the test had not come yet.

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai was suffering from multiple diseases and was not provided with any treatment during his incarceration. His family members were kept unaware of his health condition. He was 77 years old. Muhammad Ashraf Sehari had born in Lolab area of Kupwara district in 1944. He was also the columnist of weekly “Azan”.

When Syed Ali Shah Geelani relinquished the responsibilities as Chairman Tehreek-e-Hurriyat due to deteriorating health then Muhammad Ashraf Sehari was elected as Chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai has left behind three sons and two daughters. He all along his life worked as a lieutenant of Syed Ali Geelani, and was a member of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai was a hardcore freedom fighter and had allowed his son Junaid Sehrai to join the ranks of armed struggle. Junaid was martyred on May 19, 2020 in Srinagar. Junaid Sehrai was the divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen. The Indian authorities had not handed over the dead body of Junaid Sehrai but Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai had himself led the funeral prayer of Junaid Sehari in Srinagar.

According to the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Convener for Pakistan Ghulam Muhammad Safi, the police officials while contacting the family of Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai told that Muhammad Ashraf Sehari could not be buried in Srinagar and Kupwara.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the death of Muhammad Ashraf Sehari. Geelani has prayed higher status in heaven for the departed soul and courage for the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.

Meanwhile Jamaat-e-Islami occupied Kashmir leader Maulana Ghulam Nabi Noshehri in a statement has declared the death of Muhammad Ashraf Sehari as big loss for freedom movement of Kashmir. He said that Muhammad Ashraf Sehari passed his whole life in freedom struggle of Kashmir, adding that Kashmiri nation will always remember his services. He also prayed higher status in heaven for the departed soul and courage for the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.
