Nawa Kadal Encounter: 2 More Injured Civilians Die, Toll Mounts to 3

SRINAGAR: Two more civilians who had been injured during house collapse at the encounter site in Nawa Kadal area of Srinagar last week succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital here on Eid day plunging the city into grief.

With todays deaths the toll of civilians killed has gone to three while four more injured remain under treatment in the hospital.

First a 55 year old man identified as Manzoor Ahmad Khan a resident of Hawal, Srinagar, who was also injured in the house collapse at the encounter site, succumbed at SMHS hospital on Sunday morning, the health officials said.

Barely a few hours later, one more injured youth identified as Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, 35, son of Muhammad Hafeez Bhat of Jamalatta, Nawa Kadal, also breathed his last at SMHS hospital.

“Another injured has succumbed today afternoon. This is the second death since morning,” Medical Superintendent SMHS, Dr Nazir Choudhary told Kashmir Observer. He said that the both the deceased had burn injuries.

Basim Aijaz who died on May 20

According to the residents of Kani Mazar locality in Nawa Kadal quarter of the old city a large number of people were visiting the encounter site after guns had fallen silent on May 19 to assess the damage. It was during that time a half burnt house collapsed leaving seven people critically injured.

12-year-old boy who was among the injured succumbed at SMHS on May 20. He was the first causality of house collapse. The boy was identified as Basim Aijaz, of Chotta Bazar.

It bears mention that Special Operations Group of police and paramilitary CRPF had trapped Hizbul Mujahedin commander Junaid Sehrai and his associate in Kani Mazar locality of downtown on the night of May 19.Indian Occupational Forces later blasted the house where mujahideen were trapped and were putting up resistance, Occupational forces fired high intensity mortar shells resulting in a fire that also damaged scores of surrounding homes.
