Congress Sarpanch Shot Dead In Anantnag

Srinagar: A Congress party Sarpanch was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Monday in Dooru area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

35-year-old Ajay Pandita was walking on the road in his native village Lokbowan, Larkipora when suspects appeared there and opened fire upon him this afternoon, reports said. Pandita, a Congress worker collapsed on the ground in a pool of blood while the gunmen managed to flee from the spot, reports said.

He was removed to the Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for treatment, however, the doctors there declared him brought dead.

“He had multiple gunshots injuries in his face and shoulder. He was already dead when brought to the hospital,” an official told news source.

Pandita, a staunch Congress supporter had won Panchayat elections by defeating his nearest BJP rival by 41 votes.

While police blamed mujahideen for the killing of the Sarpanch no mujahideen group has so far claimed responsibility.

A police spokesperson in a statement issued here today said that a case has been registered under relevant sections of law.
